theflightlessphoenix asked: Hello! I see you run a KH blog, and as someone who was hoping to get into the series I would like to ask you (and your followers) for some advice on how. Basically, I'd like to have watched and/or played all of the games in the series. I do NOT own a Playstation, PSP, or Vita, but I have access to all the games for GBA, DS, 3DS, and iOS. I am aware there's a movie but unsure how it fits in. What order should I play the games in and how do I play the whole series if I don't own all the consoles?
The best way to play all the Kingdom Hearts games currently is to buy Kingdom Hearts HD 1.5 Remix and Kingdom Hearts HD 2.5 Remix (which will be released in December). 1.5 contains the first Kingdom Hearts, Kingdom Hearts Chain of Memories and a compilation of cut scenes from the side game 358/2 Days. 2.5 will contain the second Kingdom Hearts game, the prequel Birth By Sleep and another cut scene compilation of Re:Coded, a game set after Kingdom Hearts 2.
HOWEVER. The remixes are all on PS3. So if you cannot buy the console or find someone who will let you borrow/use it, then my next advice is to watch videos on Youtube. You can choose whether to watch play throughs of entire games or watch the compiled cut scenes of each game separately. These can usually be found by typing in ‘all Kingdom Hearts 1 cut scenes’ or ‘all birth by sleep cut scenes’.
While some people call these cut scene compilations ‘movies’, there is no official Kingdom Hearts movie.
As you have a 3DS, you can buy Dream Drop Distance which is a sequel to Kingdom Hearts 2. It references most of the other games in the series so if possible I recommend you play this last.
If this is all getting a bit complicated you can also get into the series via its manga. It’s actually really good and builds well upon the story in the games, sometimes even improving it. Kingdom Hearts 1, Chain of memories and 358/2 Days all have complete manga series and Kingdom Hearts 2 is halfway through completion, so check them out if possible, they are really good.
My last piece of advice is a timeline. There are a lot of games in the series, and not all of them have numbers. The rough chronological timeline of the current series is as follows;
Birth By Sleep
Kingdom Hearts 1
Chain of Memories
Kingdom Hearts 2
Dream Drop Distance
If you have the luxury of playing each of these games, I recommend playing them in this order;
Kingdom Hearts 1, Chain of Memories, Kingdom Hearts 2, 358/2 Days, Birth By Sleep, Re;Coded and Dream Drop Distance.
Playing them in this order/watching on Youtube is how I think a newcomer might best enjoy the series.
This is a lot of info, so sorry about that. If you have any other questions or if I haven’t made anything clear message me again. If anyone else has advice on the best way to get into the KH series, please comment.
